9th Edition and a New Marine Project

I've been watching the new 9th Edition articles with a fair bit of excitement.  The timing really couldn't have been more perfect for me.  Having recently lost 95%+ of my hobby stuff, including all of the rules and most of the models, this is a perfect jumping back in point.

Given that I don't currently have much in the way of a coherent army, I'll be starting with 500pts of Raven Guard Successors.  I'll most likely be using the upcoming Crusade rules to give my dudes a bit of lore as I build up the army.

To start with, I'll be using a Vanguard Marines Patrol Detachment...
  • Captain in Phobos Armour (Warlord)
  • Lieutenant in Phobos Armour
  • 10x Infiltrators
  • 3x Suppressors
I was able to salvage these models, but the painting I'd done was ruined and so were the bases.  I'm going to start by rebasing and priming.  The glue for the sand is currently drying.  It's a nice day, so I'm hoping to prime them so I can start painting tomorrow (or maybe tonight).

I have a game scheduled for Friday night with a friend.  I'm hoping to be able to get some paint on at least a few of these guys before them.  I was originally going to go for a halved paint scheme, but I'm changing my mind on that.  Now, I think I'm going to go for more of a dark teal color, with grey cloaks.  I think that'll look nice.

Project Khorne Dogs - Karanak Pt2

Time to get painting!

First off, this is what I'm working with.  My buddy Jon sent this to me so that I could get restarted.

I spent probably an hour and a half popping open all the bottles and dropping in a ball bearing.  This is supposed to really help with mixing up the paints...  and the set came with 100 ball bearings, so it seemed like a no brainer.

I also picked up a couple of Games Workshop contrast paints because I've been wanting to see how they work and this seems like the perfect opportunity.  I picked up Blood Angels Red and Shyish Purple.

Before I get started with the pictures, AP means Army Painter and GW means Games Workshop.

I started out doing a heavy drybrush of AP Dark Stone followed by AP Ash Grey and AP Matt White.  The goal was to give the contrast paint a nice underlying shading.  It felt almost like painting the model in black and white, but very rough.

For the next bit, I wish I had taken more photos of the intermediate steps.  Unfortunately, you'll just get to see the end result.

I started by coating the model in GW Blood Angels Red contrast paint.  It goes on looking really sloppy, but dries very nicely.  This is the still wet photo...

Once that was dry, I added some GW Shyish Purple contrast paint to what I considered to be the darker areas...  the bits of hair, the tail and the frills.  Once the purple was dry, I drybrushed the hair and frills with AP Dragon Red and the AP Pure Red.  This was done to try to blend the purple and red together.

For the mouth, I based the tongue in a 50/50 AP Pixie Pink/AP Pure Red mix and then highlighted the end with AP Pixie Pink.  The teeth were painted with AP Skeleton Bone.  I didn't see any need to highlight the teeth as they're pretty small.

The bronze areas (collar and high quarters Khorne mark) were based in AP Oak Brown and then AP Weapon Bronze.  I will say that I miss the coverage of the GW base paints, but the AP paints are working well.  Once dry, I used AP Soft Tone to tone the bronze bits down a little.

This is as far as I got.  While painting, I watched around three episodes of Breaking Bad, so I guess this took about three hours.  I'm pretty impressed with how the contrast paints work.  I can definitely see buying more of those for future projects.

I still need to do some more detail work here.  I want to highlight the bronze a bit more and maybe add an orange glow around the high quarter Khorne marks.  I also need to paint in the eyes and decide whether or not I want to leave the spine spikes red or paint them like the teeth.  Toes need to be painted also.

I'll decide on the base when the rest of the model is done.  Hopefully soon.

Project Khorne Dogs - Karanak

Ok...  time to hobby.  It's been awhile since I've touched a pair of clippers or a brush.  I want to try some new things this time around.

For this army, I've decided to go with my standard cork and sand basing scheme.  I haven't quite decided on the basing colors yet, but probably a dirty brown.  I don't want too much contrast with the red models.

Karanak was super easy to assemble.  My local store reopened for business a few days ago (screw you Covid-19!!!), so I was able to pick up some Bob Smith Industries (BSI) Plastic Glue and Super Glue.  The stuff is amazing.  Can recommend.  I'm trying to be a little smarter where it comes to hobby expenditures (given that need to re-buy basically everything I owned), so I'm using an inexpensive primer from Home Depot...

Stuff works surprisingly well.  It reminds me a lot of the standard Games Workshop black primer, but at only $4 per can.  I think I'll be using this from now on.  A nice bonus is that they have the same flat spray in several dozen different colors.  Some are gloss, which I'll stay away from, but I think others might help for a nice colored primer when needed.

Anyways...  Karanak is based and primed and ready to paint.

More details to come!!!

Project Khorne Dogs - First Post

So, as I mentioned before, I suffered a home fire, losing almost everything hobby related in the process.  I've had lots of wonderful friends step in and try to make me whole.  My friend Jon B. sent me hobby tools, paints, brushes and a Prophecy of the Wolf starter box.  My other friend Chris V. dropped off two copies of the Khorne side of Wrath and Rapture.

I've decided to start with Wrath and Rapture as I've never painted predominantly red models and I think it'll be a good challenge.

I'm currently sitting on...
  • 2x Karanak (the named Flesh Hound)
  • 20x Bloodletters
  • 6x Bloodcrushers
  • 10x Flesh Hounds
I realize that Warhammer 40k 9th Edition is just around the corner (at this point it has been announced, but without a release date), so it doesn't make a lot of sense to try to make an army list quite yet.  Fortunately, these units don't have much in the way of options.  My plan is to add banners and musicians (is that the right name?) where possible, because it adds a little flair to the army.  At the current points levels, and taking all the available options, this is basically a ~660 point Patrol Detachment.  I'd have to add more Bloodletters and a second HQ to turn it into a Battalion.  Might happen.  Might not.

I'm not entirely sure where I'll start.  Probably with Karanak.  He's a single model and I have a spare in case I screw up the color scheme.

I'm Back

Let me start this off by saying that it's my intention to restart this blog.  I was suffering from a sort of hobby malaise for awhile and let this slip.  I experienced recent tragedy when my home burned down, losing most of my possessions in the process.  I'm now in a position where I want to rebuild, but I want to do it right.  That means hobby progress logs, accurate inventories, etc.

You'll be seeing a lot of posts coming up soon.  I won't be posting on a specific schedule, but I will be posting every time I hobby, which I'm hoping is at least 2-3 times per week.

Necron Floaty Thing

I've given up on finding a Ghost Ark that isn't either pre-owned/built or selling above MSRP on eBay.  They've been consistently out of stock from GW for something like 9 months.  As such, I've decided to take matters into my own hands and build something.  The plan is to do a floaty pyramid with a "teleportation matrix" built in as a big lens and then something Canoptek looking to carry the weapon systems.  I'll do something similar for the Doomsday Ark.

I threw together an initial Mk1.  I think it needs some detail work, but overall I'm pretty happy.  The pyramid base is about 60mm across, so it should be roughly the same size as the pilot's area on a real Ghost Ark.

A Special Project

I was surfing Thingiverse and found plans for a Bolt Pistol that is sort of a cross between the older styles and the newer Primaris style.  Sold!  My printer has been running non stop for a couple of days now to print all the pieces.  They all sort of dovetail together.  It's a really smart design.  The guy who runs Warlayer.com designed the thing.  He's amazing.  Buy his stuff!

I think it's going to take me awhile to work on this thing.  I ordered some airbrush paints, which I think will help a lot, but they're currently on back order.  I'd order from somewhere else, but I got an amazing discount.

Some Infinity Models

My buddy plays a lot of Infinity and asked me to paint up some more models for him.  This is a pretty quick and dirty color scheme intended to more or less replicate the official scheme.  I think it's a pretty good fit.  In any case, my buddy was pretty excited, so I guess I did a good job!  haha
